"This is not your average gapyear project overun with countless volunteers - you are in charge, independent and have the chance to use all your creative outlets to teach these kids any word from sock to worm. As well as teaching every day, you live with the most amazing family in the world (this is not an exageration).. Miss Maria, introduced herself to me as mamma uno. I left the nursery with an enormous sense of acheivement, conversational spanish and a new family on the other side of the world. O and I've barely mentioned the children, CUTE! Get limbered up for the hokey kokey. This is your chance to have some fun - teaching 4 year old chileans doing the time warp is a great way to spend an afternoon."
"My main reason for coming to La Calera was to work with the children in the nursery. What amazing little people they have been. There are some awesome characters amongst them. I just loved baking classes on Wednesday with Abueli, dress up time, sing song time, let’s all climb on Tia Ruth time and just about every other activity along the way.
Tia Maribel and Anna have a heart of gold and are both fantastic with the kids. Just get stuck in with them, the wee ones don’t care if you can’t speak or understand Spanish. I do wish I was able to get more of their amazing exciting stories though. I really have loved it."
"Hola! I’m Jade from New Zealand. I’m 18 years old, and have been living in the great La Calera for the past month. And with no exaggeration, I can truthfully say it had been one of the best experiences in my life so far. I am actually writing this from the car, on the way to the airport, at 3am…because I so badly didn’t want to leave that I procrastinated from packing my bags until about 3 hours ago.
Now Gap, where to begin!
I have to say when I arrived, I felt a little nervous and I guess intimidated by the relaxed atmosphere of it all here. I wasn’t quite sure how to fit in, but after about a week and a half, I honestly felt like part of the family. Maria is one of the loveliest ladies you’ll ever meet. I don’t think I ever heard her say a cruel thing about somebody, and was like a second mum to me! (It also helped that I liked chocolate as much as she does) Manuel is wicked awesome. Such a good guy. And no matter how much he does for you he never makes it feel like it’s a chore for him. He’s pretty funny too – if you get his humour like I did. Male is super sweet and always seems to have a beautiful smile on her face."
"Chile is amazing. No two ways about it. It is South America’s little gem. The people are so wonderful, they’re some of the friendliest you’ll meet! Also, there’s so much to see and do – you’ll have entertainment constantly! Ok, so a few things about being in the beauty that is La Calera/Chile in general:
First off, you’re being cared for by one of the lovliest families you’re going to meet – they’re amazing. Even if there’s a language barrier, you can tell how lovely they are.
Not many in Chile speak the English - so get your Espanol nice and good.
Pay big attention to the Gap Chile team – they’re COMPLETELY amazing, and they totally know what they’re doing, so you don’t need to fret – you’re in good hands."
