Volunteers are placed in shared accommodation based in La Calera, Region V, Chile. It’s under 2 hours outside of the capital city, under an hour away from the beach and over an hour away from the snowy mountains. Pretty good considering how big Chile is. This house really is perfect to just jump on to local buses to get away and see more at weekends.

The house, or as we like to refer to it - La Casa Grande - (due to a rather large overestimation of room lengths when the house was being built) is the house where volunteers stay. In La Calera it’s a 20 minute walk to town and situated on the main road which means lots of taxi’s, buses and night buses to take you to wherever you want to go. La Casa Grande has 5 spacey double bedrooms which the volunteers share amongst themselves. Maria Duran is the Housekeeper and Mama Uno for all foreign students during their stay. Food in the house is included in the accommodation costs.

Tia Maribel and Anna have a heart of gold and are both fantastic with the kids. Just get stuck in with them, the wee ones don’t care if you can’t speak or understand Spanish. I do wish I was able to get more of their amazing exciting stories though. I really have loved it."

I have to say when I arrived, I felt a little nervous and I guess intimidated by the relaxed atmosphere of it all here. I don’t think I ever heard her say a cruel thing about somebody, and was like a second mum to me! (It also helped that I liked chocolate as much as she does) Manuel is wicked awesome. Such a good guy. And no matter how much he does for you he never makes it feel like it’s a chore for him. He’s pretty funny too – if you get his humour like I did.
